Forget a black-tie bash where everyone’s suited and booted – welcome to the Sheffield City Region Launchpad Awards, an entrepreneurs’ event with a ‘chilled, fun and informal’ difference

The Launchpad Awards 2019 are back for a second year in September with the strapline ‘celebrating everything that makes start-ups in the Sheffield City Region special’.

And to reflect that special quality, the awards evening itself will be a unique night of reward and recognition, far removed from the usual corporate black-tie events.

Instead organisers promise ‘a fun and relaxed way to recognise and reward our exciting entrepreneurs and establish our region as the best place to make your business dream a reality’.

The Awards will be held at 92 Burton Road, Sheffield – a characterful warehouse set on the edge of historic Kelham Island and home to Peddler Market – so guests can expect to switch standard business event grub for tasty treats from some of the finest street food vendors in the Sheffield City Region.

The awards, on Friday 27 September 2019, are all about showcasing the very best of start-up, pre start-up and early stage businesses.

There are seven awards up for grabs:

  • Aspiring Entrepreneur
  • Start Up Business
  • Rising Star Business
  • Inspiring Achiever
  • Growth Business
  • Young Entrepreneur
  • Made in the Sheffield City Region

Launchpad programme manager Anna Smith said: “We’re thrilled that the headline sponsor for our awards ceremony is Hallam FM, and are keen to hear from other businesses who want to get involved in sponsoring our awards with a difference. And of course, we want to hear from as many nominees across our award categories as possible.

“A lot of award ceremonies tend to have categories for start-ups but where we are different is we turn the spotlight on pre-starts as well, those who have the idea for a fantastic business but haven’t started trading.

“The awards will also recognise the ‘Aspiring Entrepreneur’, people in the early stages of developing a business idea, and ’Inspiring Achiever’ for those who have battled against the odds to succeed.”

The Launchpad Champion 2019 will also be crowned at the event, with the winner decided by a live audience vote, chosen from the winners of the seven Launchpad Awards.

Andrew Ashworth of IGO Pets won the ‘Inspiring Achiever’ award in 2018 and was crowned Launchpad Champion on the same evening after being nominated by his wife. He said: “To win one award was a real achievement for me but to be named as Launchpad Champion too, as voted for by my peers, was tremendous and has given me so much confidence, aspiration and excitement for the future.”

Andrew is just one example of one of the 5,000 people that Launchpad has helped to fulfil their dreams of running their own business. Supported by the European Regional Development Fund, Launchpad provides a wide range of start-up services including workshops, events and one-to-one support from business advisors – at no cost to the wannabe and emerging entrepreneurs.

The closing date for applications for the Launchpad Awards is 5pm on 19 July.
