A gala dinner held by Sheffield United Football Club has raised almost £20,000 for a regional cancer charity.
The Blades have made a pledge of £19,060 to Weston Park Cancer Charity – one of the club’s main charity partners – following an annual Charity Gala Dinner at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
The event, which was sponsored by club partner Doordeals, featured performances by renowned singer and 2014 X Factor winner, Sam Bailey, plus young Emmerdale actress Isobel Steele, and Sheffield-born Britain’s Got Talent finalist Kyle Tomlinson.
An auction raised thousands for charity, with lots including a holiday to the Maldives and signed Blades memorabilia.
Long-term club partner and current Blades stand sponsor Westfield Health also played a big part in the night, making a large donation to the Weston Park Cancer Charity.
The fundraising cheque from the evening was presented to Samantha Kennedy and Darren Hayes, director and business development manager at Weston Park respectively, ahead of the game against Hull City at Bramall Lane.
Dave McCarthy, operations director at Sheffield United, said: “It’s extremely fulfilling to have been able to raise such a substantial amount to one of our nominated charities, Weston Park Cancer Charity.
“As a community-focused football club, we at Sheffield United place great importance in supporting regional charities which do so much and help so many people.
“We hope that the money we and every who attended raised at our charity gala dinner makes a real difference to a charity which helps so many, every day.”
Steve Naylor, managing director at event sponsor Doordeals, said: “I’m extremely proud for Doordeals to be associated with such a rewarding and worthwhile event.
“It was fantastic to see the business community of South Yorkshire brought together with Sheffield United to raise money for such an amazing charity.”
Weston Park Cancer Charity is the region’s only specialist cancer hospital, providing care for thousands of patients across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
