Starting a business in 2020 may not have seemed like an ideal year; there were plenty of challenges and uncertainty which put many people off the idea. But it was not enough to dissuade Four Trees Lettings.

The team saw there was a gap in the market, which they had the expertise to fill, and so they set out to create an ethical social lettings agency to benefit the clients of Nomad Opening Doors charity.

Not only did Four Trees Lettings launch successfully, but they weathered the storms of uncertainly and ongoing restrictions over the past 18 months.

Now, as they finish celebrating their first year in business, they have their sights set on expansion. Up to now, Four Trees Lettings has focused on HMO (house in multiple occupation) properties and shared accommodation.

However, Four Trees Lettings will also be taking on private landlords and tenants from across the rental market to create a new arm which will deal not just with HMOs, but one and two-bedroom flats and family homes in all areas of Sheffield.

The reasons are two-fold. Firstly, Four Trees Lettings’ successful relationship with its current landlords means it can offer its expert management services to its landlords’ entire portfolios.

And secondly, Four Trees Lettings’ client group is expanding with the demand for properties beyond HMOs also growing. Four Trees Lettings want to be the agency which supports its clients for years and builds long-term relationships with tenants.

This means not only helping Nomad clients to find suitable accommodation in the private sector in shared housing, but supporting them on their journey to financial independence and family living. With this ready supply of loyal tenants, Four Trees Lettings is confident it will continue to deliver its outstanding service and occupancy rates in this new field.

This new challenge, of course, means new staff and the organisation is in the process of recruiting two members to join the growing team. A part time administration assistant will come on board first, to support the team through this expansion, followed swiftly by a lettings negotiator, who will be responsible for reaching out to new landlords, who are looking for a management company with a difference.

Chief executive Steve Rundell said: “It’s a very exciting time. We hoped Four Trees Lettings would be a success, but to reach a point where we need additional staff in just 18 months is fantastic.

“The social lettings side of the business is in constant demand, with hundreds of referrals every year. We want to take the success we’ve built on and engage new areas of the housing market, building relationships with new landlords and offering our tenants a lettings agency for life.”
