St Luke’s Hospice is asking supporters to get behind the 2.6 Challenge and make a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Virgin Money London Marathon should have taken place on Sunday 26 April but is one of the many events around the world that cannot now go ahead.

In its place, the marathon organisers have created a lockdown-friendly event which is easy for anyone to join in and make a difference, especially for charities like St Luke’s, which depends on the public’s support to provide its vital services for the people of Sheffield.

Taking up the 2.6 Challenge can be something as simple as walking or running 2.6 miles, 2.6 kms - or 26 press-ups, 26 minutes walking round the garden.

It can be a sponsored activity, or a donation -  perhaps £26 or whatever is affordable.

The 2.6 Challenge, launches on Sunday April 26 and will last for the whole of the following week.

The challenge is open to anyone of any age – the only requirement is that the activity must follow the Government guidelines on exercise and social distancing and remember to stay local.

“We do know that this is a very difficult time for many of our supporters but at the same time the work of St Luke’s, caring for Sheffield’s terminally ill people and their families, has to continue,” said St Luke’s Director of Income, Media and Marketing Kathryn Burkitt.

“The 2.6 Challenge is open for everybody to do whatever they want, either through a simple donation or through a sponsored activity.

“A simple donation of £26 is extremely important to us and really would make a great difference to the lives of our patients.

“But if you take on a fundraising challenge, you could perhaps raise £260 or even more!

“You might want to run or walk 2.6 miles, 2.6km or for 26 minutes or perhaps go up and down the stairs 26 times, do a 26 minute exercise session or sing and dance for the same period of time.

“Make it safe, make it fun and make a real difference at a time when we need your support more than ever before.”
