Sheffield Hallam University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Chris Husbands, has been elected to sit on the board of Universities UK.
The news was announced at UUK’s annual members’ meeting held on Friday 10 May. His role on the UUK Board will take effect from 1 August 2019.
Professor Sir Chris Husbands said: “It is a great honour to be elected to the board of UUK. After a period of relatively benign growth, the next three years pose significant challenges. Universities face sharp financial constraint and possible fee cuts, significant increases in the cost base as a result of pension and other changes, a radically changing regulatory environment and rising expectations from government.
“I look forward to working alongside board colleagues at UUK to respond imaginatively and creatively to a rapidly changing landscape. We must celebrate our successes, be ambitious in our vision and be bold as we address the complex challenges universities face.”
Sir Chris holds a number of other external positions. In 2016, he was appointed by the Government as the Inaugural Chair of the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) heading up the assessment panel that will make decisions on awards he was subsequently re-appointed as Chair until August 2021.
He is also a board member for a number of other higher education bodies including the ESRC/HEFCE Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) Advisory Board and the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).
He is also an Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
