The Sheffield Property Association (S-PA) hopes to raise a substantial amount of charity funding this summer as part of its first-ever sports day for the Master Cutler’s Challenge – supporting both St Luke’s and Rotherham Hospice.

Taking place on Sunday 11 August at the English Institute of Sport, the sports day will include a selection of traditional school favourites and classic track-and-field events in a bid to raise vital money for the charities.

Sponsored by S-PA members CMS, Irwin Mitchell and WT Partnership, who also helped organise the event, companies and individuals are invited to join them and the Master Cutler in entering teams consisting of 5-10 people. Teams are encouraged to bring along friends, family and colleagues to support them and make a real day of it.

Luke Barker of WT Partnership and S-PA Development Team member, said: “The S-PA is committed to supporting organisations that have a positive impact in our local community and inspiring people to do more. We hope people can come together and join us to support the fantastic work that these charities do whilst enjoying themselves at the same time.”

Over the course of the afternoon, participants will be able to take part in old-school fun, such as the egg and spoon and sack races, as well as the ever-popular tug of war. Companies will be also be able to compete for individual glory in classic events such as hurdles, 100m sprint and long jump.  There will also be a raft of other fundraising initiatives suitable for all the family, including a raffle, cake stand and face-painting.

The Master Cutler’s Challenge has become an annual tradition for the local business community, which involves businesses using their entrepreneurial skills to turn an initial £50 investment into as much money as possible for both hospices. Since its establishment over 10 years ago, the Challenge has raised over £1 million to support valued local causes through bringing together the city region’s business community, community organisations, schools and individuals.

Nicholas Cragg, Master Cutler of the Cutlers’ Company said: “What a fabulous day this will be. Lots of fun, a bit of friendly competition and all in support of two great causes through the Master Cutler’s Challenge. A massive thank you to everyone involved with the organisation of this day and also to all of the sponsors who are generously supporting the event. Liz and I are very much looking forward to joining you for this day at the English Institute for Sport – please do join us and bring your friends and supporters along too!”

Both St Luke’s and Rotherham Hospice are well known in the region. Funds raised during the Challenge will go a significant way to ensuring both charities can continue to provide vital palliative care and support for families through their community programmes.

Peter Hartland, Chief Executive of St Luke’s Hospice, said: “St Luke’s is delighted to be supported by the Master Cutler’s Challenge this year. We’re especially excited that the Sheffield Property Association is part of the team! It is great that a Sheffield organisation is helping a real Sheffield charity.”
