With work under way on the £6 million Templeborough Business Zone, HBC Construction managing director Lee Powell talks regeneration, regional pride and the ambition to create a new hub for South Yorkshire businesses.
Can you tell us about HBC's involvement in the Templeborough Business Zone development?
HBC Construction Ltd has been appointed as the lead construction contractor by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Magna to deliver the £6 million Templeborough Business Zone development. Construction work began in early June and will transform the site into a new hub for business growth and community activity.
What attracted you to this project?
We won this contract through a competitive tender process. There have been a few challenges to overcome to get the project to site, but we’re excited that it is now underway. While the business is expanding, with a new office in Leeds and projects increasingly further afield, South Yorkshire will always be close to our heart. We’re based on the edge of Sheffield and have previously delivered major South Yorkshire projects in Heart of the City in Sheffield and The Glass Works in Barnsley. We are currently working on Rotherham Markets, and this project allows us to continue building on our relationship with Rotherham Council.
We’re proud to deliver a high-quality and collaborative public/private scheme alongside Magna, creating meaningful business regeneration and contributing to economic growth in the region.
What will HBC be delivering as part of the scheme?
We are delivering eight new flexible business units totalling almost 10,000 sq. ft., including six commercial workspaces and two food-and-beverage units. Alongside these buildings, the scheme includes landscaped public areas, outdoor seating, improved pedestrian routes and parking facilities. This will create an attractive and accessible environment for businesses and visitors too.
How is the project progressing so far?
Work began in early June and things are progressing well. We're pleased to have construction underway, and we're working closely with RMBC and Magna to keep up momentum as we move through the delivery programme. The project is currently aiming for completion in Q2 2027.
