Responding to the Chancellor’s announcement on the Jobs Support Scheme, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, said: “I’m relieved the Chancellor has listened to Northern leaders and taken steps to support jobs and businesses at risk of closure from additional coronavirus restrictions.

“However, it’s clear the Government is on the back foot. Measures to protect people’s health must go hand-in-hand with action on the economy, must go much further than already planned, and must be introduced faster.

“That is why alongside local leaders, I have called for a local lockdown lifeline for South Yorkshire, which will ensure we keep lives and livelihoods safe, regardless of the level of restrictions we face next week. I will fight to ensure South Yorkshire has every pound of support and every tool we need to keep lives, jobs and businesses safe from further harm.”
