A former midwife who won a national award after launching exercise classes for fitness-conscious pregnant women and new mums has opened her own gym in the city.

Kate Campbell is the only qualified midwife teaching pre and post natal exercise in Sheffield.

Since setting up her Keep Mums Fit classes in 2007 she has helped over 1,000 women to get back their fitness and figures.

Kate, 43, of Fulwood, won the Tommy’s & Danone Baby Nutrition Hero Award in 2013, which recognises midwives who have provided exceptional care to women by developing initiatives to help them have healthier pregnancies.

A mother of two herself, Kate’s exercise classes went on to be voted among Britain’s best by Britain’s biggest parenting site Netmums.

Kate left her career at Sheffield’s Jessop Wing Hospital six years ago to become a full-time Personal trainer and is opening her gym so her expertise can help men and women of all ages and differing fitness levels.

She has taken over the former Underground fitness club beneath Park Head’s Miller & Carter steakhouse.

Opening the gym is the crowning moment in Kate’s 11-year fitness career. But it happened by chance.

She called in to buy a treadmill that had been advertised, discovered the business was up for sale and shook hands on a deal there and then.

A speciality will be the pre and post-natal classes on which Kate made her name.

There will also be wellbeing packages for pregnant women, and mother and child classes. One of the instructors is Shannon Schneider, who attended Kate’s when she came to pre natal classes five years ago. Now mum to Jacob, Shannon developed such a passion for fitness she trained as an instructor specialising in strength, and has also qualified in sports massage.

Kate, who has qualifications in weight management, nutrition, six different forms of exercise plus sports and aromatherapy massage, commented: “I’ve always been a gym bunny and as a midwife spotted the lack of fitness provision for pregnant women.

“I am very proud to have helped them to have healthier pregnancies and in a high number of cases, a less-complicated birth. The majority who came to my classes are still with me now, years after having their babies, and I now want to share my safe, effective and focussed programmes, nutrition and wellness strategies with all types of clients at any stage of health and fitness.”
