Two rival football clubs are set to come together tonight (Monday, March 4) to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity which supports the region’s only specialist cancer hospital – Weston Park Cancer Centre.

Sadly, both clubs have seen fans and their families affected by cancer and consequently have a proud history of supporting Weston Park Cancer Charity in their ambition to create a better life for cancer patients across the region.

The first show of support from both teams will be at the much anticipated Sheffield Derby at Hillsborough Stadium on Monday 4th March when Weston Park Cancer Charity takeover for the night. Prior to kick-off fans are being encouraged donate on the day and give a warm welcome to flag bearers and the charity’s mascot Westie. There’ll also be a raffle in the hospitality suite which hope to raise thousands of pounds for cancer patients across the region.

SWFC striker and Weston Park ambassador Steven Fletcher took time out of match day preparations to visit patients and staff at Weston Park; “It brings everything into perspective a little bit and reminds us that no matter what team we play for, everyone is together in the fight against cancer.”

Charity volunteers will also be based around the ground ahead of kick-off at Bramall Lane on Saturday 9th March when the Blades play Rotherham United.

SUFC ambassador Simon Moore commented; “It’s a pleasure to be part of such a fantastic charity; the staff and everyone associated with Weston Park are a credit to themselves and the community.”

Weston Park Cancer Charity’s Business Development Manager, Darren Hayes commented: “For Weston Park Cancer Charity to have been chosen to takeover Hillsborough on Derby Day is a huge honour and it gives both clubs and fans an opportunity to engage with the charity and our mission.

“Football remains a fantastic vehicle for driving awareness and we will continue to use the power of the game to raise funds to combat a disease which will affect one in two people at some point in their lives.

“Ahead of the match we’d like to thank fans for their support today and year round. It is because of people like you that we can continue to create a better life for patients and their families living with and beyond cancer.”
