In a post-Brexit world, the UK Government is understandably keen to encourage inward investment and expand trade services from outside of the EU. As a true global powerhouse, a closer working relationship with China is a key priority and likely to play a significant role in the Britain’s economic future.

Fortunately, Sheffield already has a successful relationship with China, forged through a number of investment deals in recent years, and also the number of Chinese students studying at our world-class universities.

That said, with global business dynamics continuing to change rapidly, it’s crucial that the relationship between our countries continues to grow – and quickly.

Leading the charge in working with China, New Era Square – the emerging modern China-inspired district in the centre of Sheffield, is to feature a pioneering Chinese UK Business Incubator (CUBI).

The brainchild of four forward-thinking institutions in the city – New Era Developments, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce – CUBI will provide expert advice and access to relevant business networks, with the ultimate aim to build greater working relationships and facilitate trade deals between the UK and China.

Jerry Cheung, Managing Director of New Era Developments and one of Insider magazine’s ‘Power 100 Individuals for 2020’, commented:

“Our vision is clear. We at New Era Developments are well placed – due to our key relationships with strategic partners and influencers in Sheffield and China – to act as a gateway for Chinese businesses entering the UK market. We can provide them with all the direct business support they require.

“On the other side of the coin, we are also aiming to become a hub for regional businesses – providing support and the chance to explore more opportunities in the Chinese market.”

In addition to CUBI and the already-completed 686 student apartments, New Era Square will comprise a new landmark public space, bespoke art installations, Grade A office space, vibrant East Asian restaurants and an 88-space underground public car park.

“Our intention has always been to create something special for Sheffield and the wider city region. New Era will deliver a flavour of the excitement, dynamism and energy of modern China and East Asia, married with the best of Western culture,” explained Jerry.

Phase Two is set to complete in May this year.
