Welcoming measures outlined by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak to support the self-employed and sole traders whose businesses have been affected by Coronavirus, BCC Director General Dr Adam Marshall said:

“The Chancellor’s announcement offers a lifeline to the vast majority of the UK’s 5 million self-employed people, many of whom have seen their livelihoods vanish overnight.

“Chambers, along with other business groups, have worked constructively with government to ensure the self-employed receive similar support to those who are employed through PAYE.

“We welcome the scale of this scheme and recognise the complexities involved in its design. It is now critical that the government delivers this practical support to people on the ground as soon as possible.”

Dan Fell, CEO at Doncaster Chamber, added:

“I welcome the government support for self-employed. It is a critical addition in allowing businesses to do the right thing for the country in the current uncertain climate and is something the Chamber Network has called on the government to deliver.

In Doncaster there are a high number of micro businesses that play a significant role in our economy, it is now imperative that the government puts plans in place to allow those affected to access the support available as quickly as possible.

“Similarly, any manufacturing businesses that might be able to play a part in the national effort to produce vital equipment – such as ventilators, PPE or hand sanitiser – should contact us and we will help to navigate you into the right parts of Government to take this opportunity forwards.”
