2020 SEO Trends for Small Businesses
Search algorithms are constantly changing, so it’s vital to know what’s new and what you need to continue to ensure you’re visible for potential customers.
So which trends are important in 2020? I’ve compiled my list for small businesses to focus on and stay ahead of the competition.
Video content
Video is already key for content marketing success, but 2020 could see its importance rise even further. So much so, that according to Cisco, “by 2021, 82 percent of all consumer IP traffic will be video”.
Embed videos into your content, but make sure you help Google’s algorithm to understand it by adding copy explaining what the video is.
More voice search
2019 data showed that 20 per cent of mobile searches are voice. More people than ever will talk over text, as voice queries become an increasingly popular way to search.
Most voice queries are actually local, so this is most important for small businesses. In fact, according to Search Engine Watch, “mobile voice-related searches are 3X more likely to be local-based than text”. With this in mind, optimising for local SEO is vital. Bulleted lists will also increase your chances of ranking for voice queries!
User intent
In 2019, Google launched the BERT algorithm, focusing on user intent. Currently, SEO needs to be geared towards the user, rather than the search engine. This allows for completely natural content, written entirely for the searcher’s intent, rather than optimising for strings of keywords.
You’ll be optimising for BERT if you produce content that’s high quality, relevant, informative and for human consumption, rather than to satisfy bots.
Alternative search engines
Giorgio Cassella, Evoluted’s head of marketing, predicts “a higher percentage of searchers will move away from Google to challenger search engines”.
If the population starts moving towards other search engines, it’s important for you to be visible there, too. Many industries already see 10 per cent+ traffic coming from ‘alternative’ search engines, so it’s worth considering setting up paid ads elsewhere, starting with Bing Ads.
Mobile
Yes, mobile still remains an important trend in 2020. SEOs have banged on for years that it’s beneficial to have a mobile optimised site, but it’s an absolute necessity this year. Kris Jones – Founder / CEO, LSEO.com says: “If you don’t have a mobile-friendly and mobile-optimized website, you need to take action immediately. You can’t wait any longer. “
Build your site for mobiles, and then make them work for desktop afterwards.
