Art in the Gardens returns to the Botanical Gardens this September with a number of new artists showcasing their work alongside seasoned and veteran colleagues for 2018.

The gardens will showcase pieces from artists across the country, as well as hosting jewellery and crafts stalls. ‘Queen Victoria’ and her courtiers will also be strolling around the garden.

New artists include Susan Entwistle, whose unique style of painting is created with layers of colourful dots to capture the vibrancy and essence of beautiful gardens, woodlands and landscapes, as well as Hannah Van Bergan, who is known for her lively, bold cityscapes and contemporary deckchair paintings.

Acrylic painter Cathy Dean will also be making her debut. Inspired by art books published by her Granny in 1909 which she inherited, Cathy displayed her own works for the first time 2017 Sheffield Art Show.

Cathy said: “My granny was a suffragette, head teacher and a promoter of art in schools. This led her to write books that gave guidance to teachers on practical ways of teaching art to youngsters.

“Hannah Dean, my granny, must have been one of the few women to have been published at that time. I never met her, but I am very proud of her.”

The new artists will stand alongside veterans such as Nev Wheeler OBE, who is a retired head master and volunteer since the first year of the show. Nev, who is the most senior exhibitor, will take part in the Open Art Exhibition.

The Open Art Exhibition also gives up-and-coming artists the opportunity to exhibit, such as Luke Needham, who paints wildlife portraits, Ella Haycock, who entered into the Lord Mayor Magid Magid Portraits of Distinction Competition and Samuel Simpson, an illustrator who at 17 is this year’s youngest exhibitor.

This year’s exhibition is also an opportunity to honour the memory of regular volunteer Barbara Morris, whose work will be displayed posthumously at the Open Art exhibition.

Sheffield Young Artists, which exhibits the artwork of 4-18 year olds, will also be featured at Art in the Gardens this year.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “Art in the Gardens is a wonderful opportunity for artists to showcase their work in this diverse and popular exhibition. I hope people of all ages will come along to enjoy the paintings and sculptures, as well as browse the many craft stalls taking part.”

The art show will take place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September 10:30am-5:30pm.

Tickets are £6 for adults and accompanying children go free.
