A confidential waste specialist has geared up to make life easier for businesses beefing up their data protection processes in line with GDPR laws.
Shredding, archiving and recycling experts Russell Richardson now has a £165,000 multi-tasking mobile shredding truck on the road.
The first of its kind in the SCR, it shreds not only 2.5 tonnes of confidential paperwork an hour at a client’s premises, but can destroy in seconds data-packed computer hard drives, CDs and memory sticks.
Jonathan Richardson, MD of the Attercliffe-based company, which is 40 years old this year, said: “Now GDPR has imposed tighter rules, we have scaled up our shredding fleet with a dual-function shredder to help companies including law firms, medical practises and accountants who have to take extra care of their data.
“We’re seeing an increase in customers who prefer to witness on-site the certified destruction of their confidential waste and that includes their data stored on computers and tech devices.”
Jonathan and his team are warning companies not to tackle hard-drive destruction themselves.
“People think they can simply put a hammer through a hard drive, but that guarantees nothing. Information can still be taken off a smashed up hard drive,” said Jonathan.
“Even worse, though, some simply throw the whole computer in a skip with the hard-drive still in place.”
Once made data-safe, old computer equipment can be recycled.
The business has also invested £30,000 in a reel splitter, which is already in demand by clients in the printing and packaging industry. It can chop through vast amounts of printed materials stored on reels up to a metre high.
Storing confidential data, also a major arm of the Attercliffe family-run business, is booming too. A secure archive storage site off the M1, which opened in 2015, is now at 75 per cent capacity and new premises of double the size will be launching soon.
The company’s state-of-the-art shredder deals with up to 200 tonnes of waste paper and materials every week at the rate of seven tonnes an hour and is relied on by thousands of SMEs, law firms, the head office of the Formula One Grand Prix team, numerous police forces, motor giants and even famous British fashion designers.
