Rob Shaw, Glu Recruit founder, sings the praises of Sheffield City Region’s ‘vibrant’ business community and his ‘fantastic’ team – and shares his love of the unknown

I was inspired to start my business by…

We adopted two children which was a game changer for us and I needed more flexibility to be able to be a great dad and help provide for their future. At that time, I’d worked in the recruitment industry for over a decade and it’s what I knew and loved and so I developed the business to be able to do both.

My favourite thing about running my business is…

Working with businesses of all sizes and sectors as well as candidates from a variety of backgrounds. It’s an amazing opportunity to widen our knowledge about those that make our region great. Plus, I have to mention working with my fantastic team or they will never make a round of tea again!

The three words that best describe my business are…

Personable, collaborative and distinct.

Sheffield City Region is a great place to start a business because…

There’s lots of support available region wide for start-ups, from regional development programmes, through to peer-on-peer support from experienced businesspeople who have been on their own journey and want to give something back.

Sheffield City Region is a great place to grow a business because…
The SCR is such a vibrant business community! There are so many diverse sectors and different types of businesses across our region it means opportunities are there to grow a business if you’re willing to work hard, build your brand and find your niche.

The best advice I ever got was…

You will only be successful if you are passionate about what you do and you’re on the same mission as those you work with.

The worst advice I ever got was…

If you want something done right you have to do it yourself. I love working as part of a team and believe in empowering individuals to be better than you.

The organisations that have supported me and my business include…
Business Sheffield, Enhanced Marketing Group, Hallmark Branding, MK PR and other recruitment business owners that have had a similar journey to me who wanted to offer invaluable advice and support and we’ve forged a great relationship with.

The main challenges facing my industry/sector are…

Candidate shortages in specific areas – the digital sector being one most recently highlighted.
A flooded market. Employers truly working in partnership with a recruiter.

In 5 years’ time I expect my business to…

Who knows?! The unknown excites me! I would like to think we’ve delivered our exceptional recruitment service further afield with more employers and candidates across the region, working more with our existing clients in partnership and continuing to deliver and exceed their expectations. Possibly with the addition of another location and expanding geographically.

I’d love to do more CSR work in the area and offer advice to the younger generation who don’t know what career options are open to them.
