A historic Neepsend building that once housed a 19th-century gaol, as well as more recently serving as an electricity substation, could become a buzzy new boozer.Plans have been submitted to Sheffield City Council to transform the building, which used to house the cells for the adjoining police station on the corner of Burton Road and Hicks Street, into a new micropub. In the planning documents submitted by Tribeka Developments Ltd, the pub, which can be found across from The Old Work Shop and near Yellow Arch, is referred to as Burton & Hicks. Renovations to the site would include a new rear extension and the installation of new windows.A Design and Access Statement submitted as part of the plans states: “The extension will be modest and will not detract from the appearance of the original building, which will be cleaned and repaired, respecting the conservation area status of the building. An artist’s impression showing how a new micropub at a former electricity substation on Burton Road, could look“The proposals will respect and enhance the existing structures. The site has unique character, which will be preserved and enhanced, and will be provided with a greatly improved environment.“Sustainable design will be considered essential to the success of the development.”The statement adds: “The development has the potential to provide a new use for a structure that has stood empty for many years, contributing to the very popular economy of the area and restoring a neglected character building.”Keep your eyes peeled for further updates in the coming weeks and months.
