Sheffield specialist engineering group SCX has capped its best-ever year by winning a prestigious award at a gala ceremony in its home city.

The group – internationally famous for contracts for Tottenham Hotspur and the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon – was named Large Business of the Year at the Sheffield Business Awards.

More than 900 people cheered the winners at the event backed by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry and hosted by BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration.

The accolade capped a brilliant year for SCX, an expanding 45-year-old family-run company, whose expertise lies in overhead cranes and specialist mechanical handling and lifting solutions.

The group has over 160 employees across its three units – bespoke precision engineering arm SCX Special Projects, Street CraneXpress and Burnand XH, which specialises in electronic, electrical, electromechanical and pneumatic control components.

Group managing director Simon Eastwood said: “What a tremendous way to finish the year.

“The past 12 months have seen enormous growth, genuinely ground-breaking projects, an increasing workforce, a very full order book and the opening of our own training academy. Not bad at all in these challenging times.

“The award is all thanks to our employees. We have a great company and an even better team working for it! 2018 here we come!”

SCX’s turnover in 2016/17 increased year-on-year from £20m to £30m, which Simon described as “an amazing achievement”.

The order book currently stands at £60m, enough to keep it busy until 2021.

The name of the Sheffield company has gone around the world as a result of SCX Special Projects winning contracts for retractable concertina-style roofs for Wimbledon Centre and No.1 Courts and the world’s first dividing retractable pitch for Tottenham’s new stadium.

A recent contract involves the installation of platform screen doors for the new Crossrail underground line across London.

Other work in the defence, nuclear, construction and manufacturing sectors is giving SCX an increasingly strong base at its headquarters in Wincobank, Sheffield.

The company remains committed to Sheffield through the creation of jobs, generating new business for suppliers, encouraging new talent, supporting local causes and, in recent years, expanding into new premises.

The Sheffield Business Awards recognise and reward success in all sizes of business across a variety of sectors.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an award winning business support organisation, held the awards ceremony at Ponds Forge in the city centre. A record 150 individuals and organisations entered.

The category of Large Business of the Year was sponsored by the Simm Engineering Group.
