Sheffield is once again set to prove it is the home of world snooker as the steel city plays host to the World Seniors Snooker Championship next month.

The World Seniors Snooker Championship, sponsored by Ways Facilities Management, is the most prestigious event on WSS Tour and has been staged at the iconic Crucible Theatre since 2019.

This year’s event begins on Wednesday 4 May and runs to Sunday 8 May. Each year the tournament features an all-star field of household names and international qualifiers.

24 players will take part including Maria Catalano, who will be the first woman to appear at the final stages of a Seniors event. Maria is an 11-time ranking event winner and former World number 1. She will be cheered on by her cousin of current World Number 1 Ronnie O’Sullivan.

Also making his first appearance will be former Shootout winner Michael Holt. The field contains no fewer than four World Champions in Stephen Hendry, Joe Johnson, John Parrott and Ken Doherty. Five World Seniors Champions Jimmy White, Peter Lines, Nigel Bond, Darren Morgan and the defending champion David Lilley will also be competing.

Ahmed Aly will become the first American to play at the Crucible and Canadian Bob Chaperon will return to the home of snooker for the first time in 30 years. Local player Wayne Cooper is set to bring a strong following as is three times London Champion Gary Fitness

Former Champion Stephen Hendry added: “It is great to come back to Sheffield and play at The Crucible again. It is such a special venue for so many of us and holds so many memories. I know we all still get excited to play there and are very much looking forward to competing in the tournament.”
