I was inspired to start my own business by…
After years of being employed and making profits for other business, I saw it was time to do my own thing. A client and mentor of mine – Alan David Kershaw - inspired me and encouraged me. Before starting my own business, I was working full time as a sales & marketing manager, when Alan, a psychotherapist, hypnotherapist & mind training expert told me ‘If I had your sort of skill and techniques and was as good as you I would do it full-time and start up my own business.’ So that’s what I did!
My favourite thing about running my business is…
Being my own boss and having the ability to make decisions without having to consult with lots of other people. Also, the freedom that comes with it, when it’s just down to yourself and using the knowledge and skills you have acquired over the years, there’s something very satisfying and fulfilling about that.
The three words that best describe my business are…
Agile, Forward-thinking, and Dynamic.
Sheffield is a great place to start a business because...
It is a friendly city, it is where I was born and grew up so familiar to me. I also have great business connections here and get great advice from people I know up north, for example my accountant who lives local to me.
Sheffield is a great place to grow a business because…
It’s my home town where I grew up, although I moved away to London for many years due to my career and university, Sheffield was always the number one choice to come back to due to friendships, comradery, banter and pace/way of life.
The best advice I ever got was…
An employer gives you a job, but you are in charge of your career.
The worst advice I ever got was…
When I left school a career adviser told me that my aspirations/goals were not realistic.
The Sheffield organisation that have supported me and my business include…
- Jason Scholey Millhouses Accountancy
- Welcome to Sheffield
- Pam Goodison
The main challenges facing my industry/sector are…
Regulation and licensing. Getting the mainstream medical industry to accept holistic therapies so that clients can get referrals from their doctor in the same way that chiropractors and physiotherapists do.
In five years’ time I expect my business to…
Have a turnover in excess of £1m, have clinics in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London (Harley Street). Also, to provide hypnotherapy training and a team of staff providing a range of holistic treatments.
