Every now and again, the unLTD team are released from the shackles attached to our desks and encouraged to mingle with each other – even, on occasion, being asked to fraternise with members of the general public!
For our latest foray out of the office, we pitted our wits against a range of local businesses for Wildfire Events’ highly rated Master of Tasks challenge.
Held at Gold Digger Trust's Refinery Café on Ecclesall Road, the Master of Tasks is absolutely nothing to do with the hit TV show – and potentially litigious – Taskmaster. The fact that you're asked to compete in a series of quirky challenges, judged by the Master of said Tasks until a winner is crowned, is pure coincidence. There's nothing else to see here... so look over there... and shut up, yeah!
We began with the first of several drawing rounds, which should have been an easy win for us because our designer is an artist. Unfortunately, he was on photography duty today, so we had to make the best of it with our limited talent. Asked to recreate everything from the Northern Rail logo to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon album cover (this was my time to shine), we made some interesting artistic choices but came through with a solid showing in round one.
Onto round two and a headlines challenge. Two points were awarded for correctly identifying the redacted headline, with one point given for an answer the Master of Tasks simply liked. We're a witty bunch but apparently know nothing about current affairs, so it was single-point scoring all the way for Team unLTD!
Round three was more drawing. This time, we were asked to draw the Master of Tasks' assistant, but upside down. Our attempts at bribery and flattery failed, but we were still in the running and it could have gone either way at this stage. The competitive streak had fully kicked in.
Luckily, the penultimate round played into our skill set – eating out! Asked to pick up marbles with chopsticks and move them from one cup to another, we breezed through the task and probably set some sort of world record.
For the final round, the gloves were off and the balloons were out! Each team was given a category and asked to create a balloon sculpture inspired by it. We got historical events. In what was a calculated decision – and totally not just tying a load of balloons together – we somehow managed to represent Covid in balloon form (see above - we nailed it!). With only a slight feeling of guilt for the team that had painstakingly created a full set of traffic lights, we romped to victory.
Collecting our medals (no expense spared here) rounded off a really fun morning and was the perfect way to push any looming deadlines to the back of our minds. Check out Wildfire's website for their full range of events and activities.
