Sheffield City Council is hosting its annual careers fair, this March, to enable employers to meet school students completing their GCSEs or A levels this year who are interested in pursuing the apprenticeship career route.
At this year’s fair, sponsored by utilities provider ENGIE, employers will be able to meet around 1,000 students from across Sheffield City Region, who will be coming to discuss apprenticeships, distribute their CVs and apply for upcoming vacancies. Last year, over 150 vacancies – ranging from Intermediate to Degree level apprenticeships – were filled by 16-18 year-olds as a direct result of attending the fair.
Kerri White, Social Value Officer from ENGIE said about last year’s event: “We enjoyed a great day at ‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’, meeting some positive and driven students. There was a steady flow of students visiting our stand, and great time-scaling between the schools. We strongly support Opportunity Sheffield and will continue to attend the event in future.”
Rick Franckeiss, Training Manager, Sheffield Forgemasters : “‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’ provides us with an opportunity to meet up with young potentials who might be interested in engineering. This event is targeted at the age group we particularly want to hit, and a lot of the learners are interested in our sector. It’s well-targeted – it’s exactly what we want.”
Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “This event links young people to businesses from across the region, to help them get a head start in their chosen career and find out more about the world of work. It’s also a great chance for employers to meet talented and enthusiastic young people currently considering their career options.
“Young people have so much to offer, as have local businesses of all sizes and in all sectors, so we are looking forward to seeing a packed event full of people building working relationships for the future.”
‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’ welcomes employers from a broad range of industry sectors, including –manufacturing, engineering, construction, professional services, IT, retail, health and childcare. Thanks to the event’s sponsor ENGIE, there is no charge for exhibiting employers, however spaces are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Attendance provides a fantastic opportunity for employers meet and engage with Year 11-13 students as they select their Post-16 or Post-18 pathway for 2020-21 and beyond. Employers wishing to reserve an exhibition space at the event should email Opportunity Sheffield at apprenticeshipready@sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 273 6559 for more information.
