Barnsley College has launched a new Higher Apprenticeship for budding teachers.

The apprenticeship is for teachers who wish to work in further education, adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private or community organisations.

The Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship is available to anybody who currently has an interest in teaching with expertise in a vocational or specialist subject at Level 3 or above, as well as a minimum core knowledge of literacy, numeracy and ICT.

The course is delivered over two years with students attending timetabled classes weekly, broadening their understanding of education and training whilst working through a variety of mandatory units including theories, principles and models in education as well as wider professional practice and development. The remaining modules are agreed between the employer and the apprentice to tailor the apprentice’s learning to their role with the employer.

Assessed through coursework, professional discussions and presentations, students will also partake in teaching and learning observations where 20% off-the-job training must be evidenced as part of their journey.

After successfully completing the course, students will have gained extensive knowledge in high quality teaching, managed individualised learning and legislation compliance and will be able to progress onto university-level study or enter employment as a tutor or trainer.

The course is ideal for those who have come to teaching having already achieved competence in their specialised vocation.

“They may be entering the profession as a second career and working with an employer who is keen to fast-track an already highly-skilled professional into the profession via the route of comprehensive training that supports their transition.”

This has obvious advantages in terms of increased productivity and develops a highly motivated and loyal team.
