A group of creative industry experts have given Barnsley College students an inside look into the sector.
The College’s dedicated Creative Industries Week enabled students aiming for a career in a number of creative areas an opportunity to engage with established professionals in the interactive online sessions.
Musical director and performer Edward Court kicked proceeds off with a singing technique session covering how different areas of the human body affect the voice and warm-up exercises.
Next up was voiceover artist Liz Drury speaking about the various types of voiceover careers such as translating, event announcements and voicing digital products.
There were two sessions on acting through song and dance with Jourdan Storey of Northern Prep Squadwho also held mock one-to-one auditions with students.
Students were taken through the various aspects of creating a brand by Raychel McGuin before tackling a 30-minute task. Raychel is the owner and founder of Art by Raychel which produces recycled fashion dolls, art and illustration; events, marketing, creative and communications company E=MC2; and personal and business wellbeing initiative Being in Full Colour.
The sessions started with the experts explaining their career journey and concluded with a question and answer slot which allowed the students to quiz them.
Jess Widdowson, Enterprise Team Leader at Barnsley College, said: “Our industry weeks provide students with an excellent opportunity to hear from industry professionals about different areas of the sector. With the creative industries containing some of the most competitive jobs available on the market, it’s even more important for students to gain a genuine insight into their area of study and future career path.
“The week’s activities were another example of Barnsley College working with businesses to lead the economic recovery and meet employers’ needs, both now and for future roles, by providing students and adults with the skills to succeed.
“It was fantastic to hear from students who were also reconsidering their career options, having heard from some incredibly thought-provoking speakers. I would like to personally thank all of our guests for their outstanding talks and workshops.”
