Responding to measures announced by the Chancellor to support the economy through COVID-19, Mayor of Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, said: |
“The response from the Chancellor shows the severe strain COVID-19 is placing on our economy. Today’s package is a welcome and vital first step, but I am clear that this may just be the start of radical and unprecedented action needed to keep South Yorkshire’s economy afloat. “Businesses tell me they are already facing a cash flow crisis. The immediate task must be getting support to the frontline as quickly as possible. Hard-working staff and owners cannot afford delay. “The support offered to SMEs must be matched by strong action for people worried about their jobs and at risk of redundancy. Workers need to know they will have enough money coming in and job security, and this must be made available from day one. “We are just at the start of a tough battle ahead and we must strain every sinew to support South Yorkshire’s economy through the turbulence. I will be in constant contact with Ministers to ensure support continues as long as is necessary to get through this difficult time. “But with bold, decisive and continued action, we can weather the storm and protect jobs and businesses in South Yorkshire. I will be working around the clock to make that happen.” |
