Musical movie masterpieces and theatrical performances will take over Sheffield’s Peace Gardens and Barkers Pool this weekend (21 & 22 July) as The Fringe at Tramlines brings outdoor cinema and street theatre to the city centre.

One of the highlights of the city centre’s free outdoor events, the family-friendly screenings line-up across the weekend has been released, which forms part of ‘The Fringe at Tramlines’ presented by Sheffield City Council and Sheffield BID (Business Improvement District).

The Fringe at Tramlines takes place on 21 and 22 July with performances from local acts, global music, young artists, film screenings and street theatre from The University of Sheffield.

With the free music stage moving to Devonshire Green, the Peace Gardens will now be home to a huge 33sqm screen, showing musical films suitable for people of all ages, Featuring Disney favourites, feel-good classic musicals and footage highlights from Tramlines days gone by.

Street Theatre, brought to you by The University of Sheffield will take over Barkers Pool with roaming performers also entertaining fringe festival goers as they move between locations. People will be amazed by ‘The Boulderers’, a street performance fusing dance, parkour and bouldering, roaming circus performers and the talented buskers dotted on the trail from Sheffield station into the city centre.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that Sheffielders look forward to Tramlines weekend every year and in line with the festival’s tenth anniversary celebrations we’ve developed a fantastic free event programme with The Fringe at Tramlines.

“We’re moving the popular free music stage to Devonshire Green and transforming our beautiful Peace Gardens in to an open-air cinema for all the family. We’ve planned the perfect mix of musical films to get Fringe festival goers toe-tapping, dancing and singing along to classic musical songs from Moana and Sing to Annie and Hairspray, with arguable favourite Grease headlining Sunday’s films.

“And in-between movies, we’re keeping the Tramlines ten celebrations running through the Fringe, showing a collection of Tramlines Festival highlights from the last nine years.

“The University of Sheffield have put together a host of versatile performers to entertain visitors in Barkers Pool and throughout the city centre, with quirky theatrical displays, humorous acts, a roaming circus and music from the street. It’s certainly going to be entertaining.”

Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID manager, said: “The Fringe at Tramlines has something for everyone to enjoy, including families. With the open air cinema in the Peace Gardens showing some family favourite films alongside footage from Tramlines’ archives, music fans young and old will be able to enjoy that festival atmosphere in the city centre.

“With the Peace Gardens open air cinema, entertainment at Barkers Pool and music on Devonshire Green, the BID hopes thousands of music fans will visit the city centre to enjoy food, drink and music with their families at The Fringe At Tramlines.”
