Helen Williams is a Personal Development Coach life and the founder of Helping Entrepreneurs Win (HEW) where she helps business owners to invest in themselves to create personal growth – which is then transferable into their companies. Here she shares some top time management tips
#youfirst, Business Second.
Hardly the advice you would expect from a business owner and a coach who helps entrepreneurs succeed and win, is it?
However, as the first pillar of HEW is health, and your health completely revolves around you, there is no avoiding the importance of you as the foundation to your success.
It has always amazed me how so many business owners neglect themselves and don’t appreciate how valuable their own health and wellbeing is to that of their business.
Think about it – you don’t want to build a business and simultaneously run yourself into the ground, do you?
It’s so very easy to fully immerse yourself into concentrating on the health of your business. Considering everything from marketing and branding, sales pitches and the holy grail of business – the all-important levels of revenue and profit.
Think how all of that would look a great deal healthier, and naturally be more fruitful, if you concentrated on yourself first and foremost.
Entrepreneurship is exciting and fun – you get to finally take the lead over your ideas, initiative and passion. We all know, however, that business is never easy. It requires a healthy and happy version of you to tackle it head on, warts and all.
Remember, others also want to do business with healthy, happy and vibrant business owners who exude positive energy, demonstrate a can-do attitude and radiate genuine personality.
This next bit is not rocket science to anyone, but it becomes truly neglected when it comes to entrepreneurs and the application of time management:
- Schedule some form of physical activity every day. If logistically this can’t happen before your working day begins, then schedule it at lunch or in the evening. Don’t underestimate how powerful even a 15-20 minute walk can be.
- Keep a positive sleep cycle and routine. Sleep and rest is so underrated. There is a reason why sleep deprivation is used a form of torture. Don’t do this to yourself or your business.
- Survival on caffeine throughout the day with limited water or nutritious food is not conducive to maintaining energy levels and avoiding the mid-afternoon adrenal slump.
- Read, learn, meditate, journal – so many ways to ensure you create a healthy mind and body which allows for space for you mentally and emotionally.
Everyone knows when you feel good, it shows with everything that you do. It’s no different for the application of your working day.
Prioritise your personal tasks in your schedule and make sure they happen. Never cancel an appointment with yourself.
It’s never too late to make small but impactful changes. You will thank yourself for it, and so will those around you!
