There are probably easier ways to get from Sheffield to Munich…but they won’t be as much fun as the 2020 Bangers and Cash challenge!
South Yorkshire’s youth homeless charity Roundabout launched its Bangers and Cash challenge in 2018 in collaboration with Goo Design, Bex and Co and Sheffield City Council.
The UK’s first art road show banger rally raised £96,000 as supporters drove from Sheffield to Monte Carlo in the craziest road trip of the year, their car bonnets all decorated with unique works created specially by local artists.
That money helped launch of a new service, Rapid Rehousing, enabling Roundabout to proactively go out into the community and look for vulnerable young people who may be sleeping rough.
And now Bangers and Cash is back on the road again for 2020 with a new route covering four days, six countries and 894 miles as competitors head for the finish line in the German city of Munich.
But just to make things interesting for the teams, the rally will take a circuitous route to its final destination, taking in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland as well as some of the famous sights of Germany – including a mad king’s fantasy castle!
The crazy rally sets off from Sheffield on September 10 2020, with a route that will include an overnight ferry crossing from Hull to Rotterdam in Holland.
Day two will go from Rotterdam to the German city of Koblenz via Eindhoven, Cologne and Nurburgring.
On day three the route will take in Strasbourg, Basel and Konstanz, with day four going on to St Gallen, Bregenz, Bad Hindelang, the celebrated Neuschwanstein Castle and Garmsiche-Partenkirchen before arriving at the finish line in Munich on day five.
With teams already signing up, anybody interested needs to make contact with Roundabout quickly as the challenge is limited to just 30 cars.
Competing teams of three each have to pay a registration fee and then raise at least £2,000 in sponsorship.
Adding to the difficulty of the adventure, each team is allowed to spend no more than £650 on their vehicle.
“Our first Bangers and Cash event proved so popular that we knew we wanted to do it again,” said Roundabout Chief Executive Ben Keegan.
“But having taken our teams down to Monte Carlo the first time, we knew we wanted to give them an even greater adventure in 2020 and our new route is guaranteed to test their motoring skills to the limit.”
And that first adventure really has made an enormous difference to the lives of the young people supported by the charity.
“Before Bangers and Cash we were supporting 180 young people every day but today we support 250 people every day and we have given advice, support and housing to over 600 people in the last 12 months,” said Ben
“We focused our Bangers and Cash fundraising on homelessness prevention because we that if we can stop young people slipping into homelessness in the first place, it is much easier for them to rebuild and live fulfilling lives without the need for support services like Roundabout long into their futures.
“Bangers and Cash is a really great opportunity for Roundabout to raise the money we need to maintain our services and also to highlight awareness of the problems of youth homelessness as we continue to expand our programme.”
