Festival On The Square, the brand new immersive festival celebrating what Sheffield has to offer on the art, cinema and theatre scene, has unveiled its free to attend art workshops schedule, ahead of the opening on Monday 16th August.

Activities will include a live art demonstration seeing the creation of an original large scale piece of art, exhibitions from local galleries and artists such as Burton Street Gallery, BUBBA 2000, and Rose Murphy, art creation workshops spanning various mediums and a dedicated mural space for visitors and tourists to leave their mark.

The workshop schedule, commencing on Monday 16th August and ending on Sunday 29th August, will include two afternoon sessions everyday. The sessions will include inclusive art, live street art masterclass, learning card tricks, expression through art workshop, poetry, storytelling, street, break & contemporary dance, a circus skills workshop, create your own tote and Arabic calligraphy and mindfulness through art.

The event will be delivered by Tom Lord of hospitality consultancy BarCraft and Justin Rowntree from SweetSpot Hospitality, supported by Events Collective and thanks to a grant from the Sheffield City Council COVID19 Economic Recovery Fund.

Tom Lord said: “We are looking forward to bringing to Sheffield a festival that focuses on theatre, the arts, cinema and food, all of which showcase the very best of what Sheffield has to offer.

“There’s a broad range of free workshops for people to get involved with, which include inclusive art, storytelling, poetry and even a circus skills workshop, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

All of the workshops are fully inclusive regardless of age, mobility or any other requirements.

Monday 16th August 

 

Session one (1.00pm – 2.00pm) and session two (4.00 – 5.00pm) 

 

  • Burton Street Foundation – An Inclusive Art Workshop with an incredible organisation who have created a dedicated art space for Learning Disability Visual Arts in Sheffield. They offer a nourishing environment for the creative expression of people’s individual artistic talents and exploration of their capacity for creation and the creative arts. Festival goers are invited to join an example of these unique sessions led by Daniel White who has 6 years’ experience delivering inclusive visual arts based workshops.

 

Tuesday 16th August

 

Session 1 (1.00pm – 2.00pm) 

 

  • Magi-Cal – learn amazing card tricks with self taught magician, Callum Morris, who has been learning and honing his talents for more than 10 years specialising in mesmerizing card tricks and sleight of hand. Callums will be at the festival to entertain and teach some simple but amazing tricks.

 

Session 2 (4.00 – 5.00pm)

 

  • Rose Murphy – hosting a poetry workshop, Rose has an ethereal air which penetrates her work, Rose invites audiences to this relaxing and joyful workshop and says “we all have beauty inside which reaches out to be shared and in poetry I will take you on your own personal journey in channelling your heart and expressing whatever you feel in a relaxed, safe space. You are wordsmiths. You are out there. Come in and explore…”
  • Neil Simpson  – joining Rose, will be Neil with his storytelling workshop, Neil is a poet, performer and passionate about  an art with a 10,000 year old tradition; that of storytelling and its importance in our modern world.

 

Wednesday 17th August 

 

Session one (1.00pm – 2.00pm) and session two (4.00 – 5.00pm) 

 

  • Jo Gawthorpe – a fully qualified meditation and Mindfulness coach, Jo will deliver bite sized sessions created to help people deal with the everyday stresses of life, to not be distracted by the thousands of thoughts going through our minds and to live and enjoy the here and now. The artist’s work will be available to view and for sale in the Gallery Marquee.

 

Thursday 19th August                        

 

Session one (1.00pm – 2.00pm) and session two (4.00 – 5.00pm) 

 

  • Rationale Arts – hosting a street, break & contemporary dance workshop through the presentation and the provision of workshops in dance, music and theatre. Rationale Arts aims to promote inclusivity and positive appreciation of the arts. The bitesize workshops combine easy to learn, but super fun dance moves with a subtle theme of mindfulness throughout, celebrating how the body moves.

 

Friday 20th August

  • Green Top Circus (3 hours – outside on the square) – hosting a circus skills workshop, Greentop is the North’s leading circus centre with a mission to promote excellent circus that inspires young people, strengthens communities and develops artists. Everyone is welcome to find their inner circus performer and try your talents at juggling, diablo, poi and more!

 

Saturday 21st August

  • Uzma Rani – learn Arabic calligraphy and mindfulness through art with Uzma.  Uzma developed her written and artistic talent as a wellbeing tool after career and family life took its toll. Her workshops will fuse British and Asian culture and include Arabic calligraphy, acrylic painting and mindfulness through art.

  • Gemma Lock – create a hand printed tote bag & take it home with Gemma’s workshop.

Gemma is an emerging Sheffield talent whose vibrant work which focuses on nature, animals and the abstract can be seen in the Festival Gallery. In this workshop Gemma explores simple but wonderfully effective printing techniques to create your own uniquely designed tote bag to take home.

  • Bubba 2000 live art workshop – a live street art masterclass – renowned Sheffield artist Bubba 2000  will be delivering a totally unique “live street art creation masterclass” where he will demonstrate all the elements of turning an illustration into a finished stencil art piece.
